Billings, MT (September 13, 2024) – A suspect fleeing a domestic incident in Billings on Friday evening allegedly caused a fatal crash at the intersection of 24th and Broadwater that claimed two lives.
Billings Police Department Lieutenant Matt Lennick confirmed that officers were dispatched to a domestic disturbance at a church located at 29th and Broadwater at 6:54 p.m. on Friday, September 13. The suspect fled the scene in a car, driving northbound on the sidewalk and then turning eastbound onto Broadwater.
As the suspect drove into the intersection of 24th and Broadwater, running a red light, he struck another vehicle. At the time of the collision, the pursuing BPD officer was approximately in the 2600 block of Broadwater, still about two blocks behind the suspect. Both occupants of the other car died in the crash, though their identities have not been released.
Following the crash, the suspect exited the car and fled on foot through multiple yards and streets. He was eventually caught and taken into custody near 18th Street. In the interim, an investigation is still ongoing, though charges are pending.
We offer our sincere condolences to the deceased victims’ family members.
Fatal Vehicle Collisions in Montana
Nearly 40,000 fatal motor vehicle accidents occurred nationwide in one recent year, resulting in thousands more fatalities. Moreover, every year, there are 21.6 fatalities per 100,000 individuals in Montana. This is the fifth-highest fatality rate in the country per 100,000 people and is nearly twice the national average of 12.9 deaths per 100,000 people. Tragically, Gallatin County experienced the seventh-highest number of roadway fatalities in Montana over the last decade.
Car accidents occur in Montana’s rural and urban areas, as is the case nationwide. Nevertheless, rural areas account for roughly 75% of Montana’s fatal auto accidents, while urban areas or unreported locations account for the remainder. Unsurprisingly, intersections and highways are hotspots for serious auto accidents. And, of course, most individuals do not anticipate being killed or sustaining severe bodily injuries when they embark on a day trip to a park or the mall in their vehicles. In a matter of seconds, however, a car accident can occur, upending the lives of victims and their families.
