Columbus, MT - Two Men Killed, One Injured in Head-on Crash on Hwy 78

Columbus, MT (August 27, 2024) – Per local authorities, two men are dead, and one is injured following a crash near Columbus that occurred just before 9:00 p.m. on Monday.

A release from Montana Highway Patrol said two men in a Toyota RAV4 were driving south on Highway 78 while a man driving a GMC Sierra was headed north. Troopers with the MHP say it is unclear at this time which vehicle crossed the center line. The two automobiles crashed head-on before stopping on the highway, blocking both lanes.

The driver of the RAV4 was a 69-year-old man from Captain Cook, Hawaii, and his passenger was a 68-year-old man from Columbus. Both were dead when MHP arrived.  The driver of the GMC Sierra, an 83-year-old man from Columbus, was transported to the Stillwater Billings Clinic with injuries. Currently, there is no additional information available regarding the suspected cause of the accident, though an investigation continues during the interim.
